How to Become a Self Made Digital Marketing Expert

by Deepak Kanakaraju on November 16, 2013

As consumers spend more time using the internet and less time with other channels – advertisers are also forced to follow this trend. The ads have to be there where the eyeballs are. Unfortunately, digital marketing is not as simple and straight forward as traditional marketing. Digital marketing is best done in-house and cannot be outsourced to a digital marketing agency for various practical reasons. This is the reason that digital marketing experts are sought after all over the world right now and the demand for such candidates will only go up in the future.

digital-marketing-expert1

If you have a marketing background and want to become a digital marketing expert; you may be wondering which is the best way to go about it. There are several courses on digital marketing which are being offered as workshops, online courses and one-on-one coaching programs.

There are even MBA programs with specialization in digital marketing such as this one: NYU Stern MBA Digital Marketing. Β There are certification exams such as HubSpot Inbound Marketing certification program and Google Adwords certification. But does attending all these courses and getting all the certificates make you a digital marketing expert? The answer is a big NO. It may help you learn the fundamentals and even some advanced concepts in digital marketing but it does not make you career ready for a position like Digital Marketing Manager. Digital marketing expertise comes with digital marketing experience.

The best way to become a digital marketing expert is to start practicing digital marketing from today. The best thing about digital marketing is that you can start doing it at a very small scale. All you need is a computer, an internet connection and a small amount of money to play with. You can learn digital marketing by applying the concepts in your own mini-project. Here are the things you can do right now:

Applying Digital Marketing on a Small Scale

  • Choose a topic you are passionate about and start a blog about it. Cost: Approx $50 per year for domain and hosting.
  • Learn a little about SEO and write SEO optimized articles in your blog.
  • Install Google Analytics tracking code and see if you are getting some traffic to your blog. Explore Google Analytics.
  • Open an Adwords account and do some keyword research to see what people are searching for in Google to find information on the topic you are blogging about.
  • Write more articles and publish on your blog.
  • Open a Facebook page dedicated to your blog (apart from your personal page) and share the articles on your Facebook page.
  • Promote your page with Facebook advertising. Budget for promotion can be as low as $10.
  • Implement Facebook like box in your blog.
  • Embed social sharing buttons in your blog articles. You can do this using WordPress plugins and it is free.
  • Sign up for an email marketing service such as Aweber. Costs $20 per month. Also try MailChimp.
  • Embed email signup forms in your blog and collect subscribers. Email subscribers whenever you publish something in your blog.
  • Promote your Facebook page through email marketing and in turn also get more email subscribers from your Facebook page.
  • Promote your blog via Adwords. Get started with very low CPC bids. Most new Adwords accounts get a free $100 credit for promotion. If you don’t get it, call Adwords support and they will give you free credits to get you started.
  • Sign up for Google Adsense and deploy advertising codes in your blog.
  • Convert your blog into a mobile friendly blog and create mobile ads in Adwords.

All the above steps can be done in 30 days by investing one hour per day. After you do all the steps above your would have gained a bit of hands-on experience in the following areas which pretty much sums up to the following major components of Digital Marketing:

Components of Digital Marketing

  • Content marketing
  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  • Paid Search (PPC)
  • Email marketing
  • Social Media Marketing
  • Digital Display Marketing (Ad Ops)
  • Web Analytics and Reporting
  • Mobile Marketing

30 hours of experience does not make you an expert in Digital Marketing but you will be a much better qualified digital marketing professional than most of the people out there on the market. After this you can continue scaling up your mini-project and add even more things to it. For example, Google webmaster tools integration is something I have not mentioned in the above list but it is important for digital marketing. Your expertise will increase to the level you are ready to scale up your project.

I became a digital marketing expert on my own. My first project BikeAdvice.in started with the steps mentioned above. I kept scaling it up to a point where it reached more than 1 million page views per month and it was one of the leading motorcycle portals in India at that time. It became a fully operational business with 5 team members, significant revenue from display advertising and deep relationships with leading motorcycle manufacturers in India. As of now that project has been acquired by a big media company.

The job of a Digital Marketing Manager

Practical hands-on experience of applying digital marketing principles added with some qualifications and certifications makes you an ideal candidate for a job profile such as Digital Marketing Manager of a brand or company.

As a manager of digital marketing you will be responsible for spear heading the entire digital marketing wing of the company. You may also have to manage a team of people who will be ready to execute specific digital marketing actions. Digital marketing is most effective when all the components of digital marketing are used in such a way that they complement each other. This is also called Integrated Digital Marketing. If the company is large enough, the job title can be VP of Digital Marketing where several managers report to the VP. Such jobs are coming up fast and can be highly lucrative.

If you are not interested in a full time job like I have just mentioned, you can still use your digital marketing expertise to consult, speak in conferences and universities and grow your own internet projects.

So what are you waiting for? Get started becoming a digital marketing expert today. Now. πŸ™‚

Loved this article of yours! Can you shed some light on each aspect of Digital Marketing with an actionable template or tools for people to get moving on their projects? For example, start off with a content planner/scheduler for Content marketing/Social Media.

Thanks!

Reply

Deepak November 17, 2013 at 11:25 am

Hi Tara, thanks for the comment. Good to know my article helped. I will publish another article with a more detailed template with the various digital marketing action steps. This will include action steps under each component of digital marketing. If one follows all the steps, then their digital marketing campaign should be pretty successful.

Content planner or scheduler is not feasible because the frequency is unique to every industry. For example, in my automobile portal, I would have to published at least 2-3 posts per day covering all the news and events. However, in this blog I can post only 3-5 posts per month but each article will be detailed.

Good example is mention in the article too (BikeAdvice.in)

Even i’m a starter (probasketballtalk.in) and with these articles, upgrading myself and becoming the best from nothing.

Hi Deepak,

Great article! As you rightly said, hands on is very important. I have a few questions:

1. Apart from google certifications, what are the other credible certifications in india to pursue a digital marketing career?

2. My understanding of a digital marketer was that one needs to touch base with all the above mentioned action points, however the work is more towards getting things done from media, advertising agencies etc. Please shed some more light on it.

3. Could you recommend any particular blog (Apart from yours offcourse), website, forums etc to learn digital marketing.

4. Could you also chart the career progression of a digital marketer?

Regards,
Jaikumar

There are lots of coaching programs available. I haven’t tried any of them so I cannot comment on it right now. As I have mentioned in this article, self learning is the best. When someone is there to guide you it is better and faster but I doubt many coaching programs just teach you the basics and may not provide mentorship from a seasoned expert.

You can keep scaling up with your own business and use the expertise to make profits. Else you can join a company as a marketing manager like I have done. Since I have worked with a few upcoming startups in India, I had the opportunity to manage adwords campaigns in the $100,000 range (quarterly spends).

Great post and good step by step info but Deepak In house jobs will increase for sure but companies going for in house team can’t give them great results as much as advertising agencies can give to support this the reason is:
Good Digital Marketers will never prefer working for any company as a employee they would them self love to work as a consultant or may also build good Advertising Agency.
Anyways apart from this I loved the way you explained it will be very helpful for beginners.

Yes, it is completely ok to skip paid campaigns if you can afford to do that. Who needs paid campaigns if you have the skills to generate inbound traffic for free.

Thank you for writing this post. I started working as an ‘Internet Specialist’ for a one-floor automotive dealership about a year ago. When I was hired I was fully upfront with the owner letting them know I have been self-taught w/ building my own website, Google Analytics and very basic HTML knowledge. I told them that while I work on my direct responsibilities within the dealership I will also learn more of the marketing aspect on the side. I quickly learned that Automotive Digital Marketing is a whole other ball game and I sometimes get so side-tracked by all the different things I could learn that I don’t end up learning anything at all!

I have been reading your blogs and articles since I started working here and have learned so much from you! Thank you πŸ™‚

I am not into digital marketing as a career but as a business owner I like to keep informed with marketing trends so I know when I am being ripped off.

I stumbled across this page whilst doing a google search for “google partners”, I was doing some research on the legitimacy of certified adwords agents, I am in communication with a gentleman from Mumbai who has shown interest in managing an adwords account for me. He claimes to have certain advantages than I. At the cost and the promised result of near magic I am a little weary to pay upfront for the service.

Do you have any advise for me to safe guard the transaction? Or can you tell me what questions i should be asking him.

I dont want to lose the skills offered but I dont want be conned outve $$ either.

Kindly email me if you can spare a moment.

Hello Deepak,

Thank you for the article. It was really good to see how things can be simplified and explained rather than the complex explanation I have been finding on digital marketing. I am planning to not go full time till I am satisfied enough to take the leap. So hopefully the time comes sooner than expected.

Hello Deepak. What a great article. Lots of information you have in all your articles..
I have a query that I have done my graduation in Animation and Multimedia from BIT Mesra & my PG degree in Journalism & Mass Communication. What scope do I have in Digital Marketing.
Right now I am working as a junior Consultant (Marketing) in a Business Consultancy firm. My role here is to handle the digital content of the company to attract more clients as of now. Although I am not getting a good salary here. So I want to switch.
And Digital Marketing is only what I can see from here.. But how to enter..?? Please guide.. Thanks.

Hi Deepak

This is the first time in many months that I have come across an article on digital Marketing that talks about all its aspects in a very easy to follow format.

I am a novice blogger trying to learn digital marketing through my blog and my Facebook page “twinny lives”. I am trying to start my career again after a long maternity break but just starting the blog is not giving me much insights about what I can do to make myself a successful entrepreneur in the field.

Could you suggest improvements in my blog and suggest if I should move it to Wordpress from blogger. I have a domain name registered under my name but I don’t know what to do next with it.
This might look like an absurd question but this is where am really stuck. Trying to get webhelp to learn to do things myself but not successful till date.

Your insights would be highly appreciated.

Thanks
Vinisha
