If you are planning to build a career in digital marketing, the first question to ask yourself is: why? You may have already found some good reasons but in this post we will explore more reasons why digital marketing is a great career option.
I have been in the digital marketing industry since 2007 and I know a thing or two about choosing digital marketing as your profession. Let’s explore why you should choose to build a career in Digital Marketing.
1. Digital Marketing Skills are in High Demand
Marketing is the most important function of any business. Notice, that I am not saying: one of the most. I am saying that marketing is THE MOST important function of any business. Some people may disagree with this idea but I believe most of the marketers and entrepreneurs out there will agree with me.
Yes, product development is important but without understanding the customers needs and communicating the benefits of the product to them, no product can be sold. No product team can survive if the company does market the products they make.
Everything in a business is an expense. Finance, HR, Product and other departments are all operational expenses of a business. If you invest money in these areas, there is no direct and immediate ROI.
Marketing and Sales are the only functions inside a business which gives a direct and immediate ROI. The marketer is the one who turns on the engine and and moves it. Everyone else have been just building the car until now. That’s an exciting place to be in.
A few decades back, most of the leverage was in the capability to develop or make good products. That’s no longer enough now. Product development has become easier and faster with outsourcing and new technologies. The only way a company can differentiate itself is through marketing.
A lot of companies are building great products and services. But they don’t know what is the best way to market it.
Digital marketing is an ocean and we need people specialising in digital marketing who can run efficient digital marketing campaigns.
The sudden penetration of smartphones, personal computers and internet to the masses has changed the media consumption and buying behaviour of consumers. Old methods of traditional marketing are no longer enough to reach customers.
The markets run on demand and supply. Right now there is a huge demand for digital marketers but there are not enough digital marketing experts. This scarcity creates value. This means that digital marketers are getting paid more than other jobs.
That’s a good place to be in. If you learn digital marketing and become an expert in it, people will chase you. You will get multiple job offers and you will have a tough time deciding which one to choose.
2. Your Marketing Experience Will Help You Start Up
Anyone can develop or manufacture a product if they have money to invest. A lot of people raise capital from their savings, inheritance or through investors – they can build a product in a few months.
However, if you don’t know marketing, starting up and scaling a business is almost impossible. There is no short cut to marketing skill. You cannot hire a marketer and let him to the “marketing” part of your business.
Every CEO or Founder that I know has a bit of marketer in him. People with better marketing skills end up building more valuable companies than people who are not marketing experts.
Gaining experience in digital marketing will help you get better job opportunities over time, but it will also help you when you are starting up your own business.
Wherever your work, as a digital marketer you will be involved in understanding customers needs, evaluating product-market fit and assessing demand in the market. You will also be sensitive the changing customer needs and their perceptions. All these skills are very important for starting up a business.
If you dream of being an entrepreneur after serving a certain time as an employee, digital marketing is one of the best professions to be in.
3. Digital Marketing is Challenging & Unpredictable
Digital marketing is not for everyone. Some people cannot handle the ups and downs that comes with marketing. If you start a new campaign, it is never a proper marketing campaign from the beginning. It’s just an experiment. It could work or it could fail.
If you find out what works, then you can scale it up. Only through experimentation, one can find out what works and what doesn’t.
The work of a digital marketer is not predictable. You cannot expect to finish your work in a certain period of time. One month could go on without any results.
It is that one campaign that succeeds and you have to wait patiently for it. You have to keep experimenting until you get that one successful marketing campaign that can scale.
A developer can promise that he can finish an app in 3 weeks. A designer can promise that she can design a brochure or a banner in a day.
However, a marketer can never promise that he can bring X amount of traffic and Y amount of conversions in Z time. If you can handle such unexpected outcomes, then you will be a great digital marketer. If not, a marketing job is not for you.
I hope this article gave you some insights into the job nature of a digital marketer. If you think that you are made to become a digital marketer, go ahead with it! All the best!
